Get groceries or at least breakfast stuff in Coco before arriving at the villa.
There are NO grocery stores between Coco and Ocotal (although there are a few
"pulperia" stores kind of a strippted down Costa Rican version of 7-11).
Grocery Stores: There are four in Coco. Automercado at the Pacifico complex, on your
right as you enter Coco from the airport, is the spiffy one with sushi and organic
vegetables (and corresponding prices). Across the street is the more genuine Luperon
where the locals shop, with their dogs in tow. As you turn left to go to Ocotal on your left
is the SuperCompro, a medium option.
Pop's Ice Cream next to the Automercado in Coco. Cool tropical flavors like guava and
cas and great regular flavors also.
Local Fruit and Vegetable Stand: at the triangle on the road from Coco to Ocotal, just
before you turn left. They usually have whatever is in season at prices a fraction of what's
at the grocery stores.
Fresh Fish: buy fresh fish at the local fish market and grill it on the villa BBQ:
Directions to fish market: drive out of Ocotal towards Coco. About 200 meters before
the School on the left (and before the last bridge) there is a dirt road. Turn left and go
over a tiny bridge about 50 meters and the local fish market is on your left.
Aside from the restaurants on our restaurant list, try Pop's ice cream in the
Pacifico mall next to the Subway. They have great tropical fruit flavors like Cas
and Guava.
Bahia Pez Vela currently both recycles and composts. Please separate plastic/tin
and organic garbage to facilitate this green practice.
